Breaking up is hard to do--but that doesn't mean you can't have some belly laughs about it. Forgetting Sarah Marshall provides that rare treat: a romantic comedy about breakups, that is both romantic and funny. The laughs, especially from writer-star Jason Segel, are both heartfelt and raunchy, and the film is just unexpected enough that it keeps the viewer's attention till the end. The touches of producer Judd Apatow, who's famously retooled rom-coms to appeal to guys as much as women, are woven throughout the film, but Segel's script, reportedly based on many of his own experiences, is fresh and original. And adult. Forgetting Sarah Marshall features male genitalia laffs presented in unexpected and human ways (the nude breakup scene is played for giggles but also deep poignancy), and the language and sex scenes are strictly for grownups--and rightly so. Segel's script, and his performance as Peter, show that he understands the true nature of adult re! lationships, which provides the refreshing difference between this film and some of Apatow's other crude creations. The cast is sublime; Kristen Bell (Veronica Mars) plays title character Sarah, a self-absorbed actress, and Russell Brand is her new British honey who accompanies her to--what are the chances?--the exact same Hawaiian resort as Peter, who's nursing his broken heart. Mila Kunis plays Rachel, the resort employee who gives Peter a reason to hope, and Paul Rudd is the surfing instructor who gives him his own brand of heartfelt advice ("When life gives you lemons, just say 'F--- the lemons' and bail," he says cheerily). The pacing is screwball, and the absurdities fly (a "Dracula" musical puppet show, and a surprisingly lovely Hawaiian version of "Nothing Compares 2 U"). Nothing the viewer will forget any time soon.--A.T. Hurley

4 out of 5 stars You Have to Watch it Twice   August 21, 2010
Tyler S. (Brentwood, CA United States)
Allow me to pose my theory that this film is not nearly as funny the first time around as it is the second. The first time I watched this, I was definately disappointed. I was shocked to see Jason Segel in a movie so slow and empty. I failed to receive any of the jokes, and I turned off the T.V. not understanding the praise that this film met.

Then I was subjected to a second viewing of this film.

I have to say I was blown away this time around. I caught on much more quickly with the thousands of jokes that were poured into this film. The second most important factor, the heart of the piece, made the movie stand out loud and proud against all the horrible comedies out there. Forgetting Sarah Marshall really has a meaningful and relatable premise to it. All of us have been through hard break-ups and this one hits nearly everyones' soft spot. The humor and heart carried by these great comedians make this movie a great experience. I also invite you to check out the special features, because this disc offers a lot of extra laughs. Once again, I will say that when you watch this film for the first time, you will miss a lot. However, if you manage to see it again, you will unveil lots of great jokes. In other words I'm thinking now, if they were snakes they would have bit me. All this humor was right in front of my eyes, yet the film's flaw is its presentation of its comedy.

While not a blast like its semi-sequel Get Him to the Greek, Forgetting Sarah Marshall is a courageous and charming film. It lacks in its presentation, but it makes up for it in its raw comedy underneath the barriers. While I wouldn't have reccomended people to see this film in theaters, I invite everyone to own this movie on Blu-ray.

5 out of 5 stars Something for the guys and a good date movie to boot   August 16, 2010

Hey, what can I say, between the ever hot and lovely Mila Kunis (That 70's show) and Kristen Bell (Veronica Mars), and the beauty of Hawaii with bikinis as casual wear, well how can you go wrong! Well written and acted, with an easily relatable plot and just the right amount of angst and comedy, I found it thoroughly enjoyable. Though not overt, the memorable sex scene in Kristen's motel room sticks with you, as will the piece of original music performed by Jason Segel (How I met your mother) as he finally decides to follow his muse.

1 out of 5 stars SAVE your money for something worth while!   July 7, 2010

I was extremely disappointed with this movie. There were a few humorous parts, but not enough to make this film worth while. It is mainly a bunch of people walking around nude and having sex. If you like porn, this may be the movie for you. However, if you are more conservative, DO NOT rent this! The 4 star rating is deceiving!

5 out of 5 stars One of my all-time favorite movies   July 3, 2010

If i were a pro movie critic, i am sure i would find a lot of things wrong with this movie.

Since i am not, i was really pleasantly surprised by it. It was possibly the best movie of the genre that i've seen. The acting was good, and the script seemed appropriate to me.

It's been a while since i've seen a movie i liked, and i like this one.
