Product Description Having been orphaned and working as a street musician, a musically talented kid uses his gift to find his birth parents.
Amazon.com Music has long been considered a universal language with the power to bring people together, but can the simple act of playing music possibly unite a child with a mother and father who live in two different cities and don't even know of the child's existence? Having shared one extraordinary night, classical cellist Lyla Novacek (Keri Russell) and Irish singer and songwriter Louis Connelly (Jonathan Rhys Meyers) were a union meant to be that was torn apart by circumstances and a protective father (William Sadler). After eleven years, both Lyla and Louis have given up performing only to find that they are unhappy and searching for a sense of fulfillment that will ultimately lead both artists back to music and performing. Evan (Freddie Highmore) is an 11-year old orphan who's grown up hearing music in everything around him and is convinced that his real parents want him and will find him with the help of music. Driven by his innate musical genius and a powerful compulsion to perform before the world, Evan runs away from the orphanage and is initially taken in by a street man known as Wizard (Robin Williams) who encourages his musical talent and renames him August Rush and, later, by a local priest who arranges for August to receive a Julliard education. August is a child prodigy who excels beyond even the wildest expectations and earns the opportunity of a lifetime--a chance to perform in front of an enormous audience in New York's Central Park. The question is; can his performance possibly reach the audience August really craves? While elements of this film are completely unbelievable (take August's instant prowess on the guitar or his immediate and sophisticated grasp of musical notation and musical theory), the message of the universality of music and the notion that "the music is all around us, all you have to do is listen" is both compelling and powerful. --Tami Horiuchi

A mix of Annie and Oliver with a modern musical edge! September 3, 2010 AwakeNow.co.uk August Rush - I picked up this DVD and began to watch it without reading the back cover. I was not disappointed. It was a great film, with superb music and very cleverly edited, with the film looking forward and back, intermixing with the present interspersed with clever sound effects, as it filters in and out.
The film was a mix of Annie and Oliver with a modern musical edge. It was unusual to see Robin Williams with ginger hair as the modern Fagan who befriends August Rush - a music prodigy who ran away from his orphanage, believing that he can hear music in everything and that he must follow it to find his parents.
Very Beautiful Story, Loved it September 3, 2010 Jeffrey Ulrich (Scottsdale, AZ USA) I don't have a single bad thing to say about this movie. It was so awe inspiring. The only negative about the whole thing is probably Robin Williams, but only because he was such a nasty character. The music used in the movie is so beautiful and the plot/story is one of the most inspirational I've seen in a very long time. The ending has to be the ultimate in movie endings, I've seen this close to five times and I've cried every single one of those. I would even recommend NOT renting, because you can save the money you would spend that way to purchase this movie since it is more than worth it. More so on blu-ray, the details and colors are amazing.
August Rush August 30, 2010 lmepro Excellent movie, after renting it several times (older movie, scratched) I decided I wanted to own my own copy. I also bought the soundtrack from the movie, another excellent choice.
August Rush Review by Eme August 27, 2010 Eme The delivery of the DVD was fast and I was happy to see the quality was very good. This was the second DVD I purchased from Amazon and I was very pleased. I recommend Amazon DVDs.
The movie is a great inspirational movie for musicians and those with the gift of music.
My Favorite Movie August 23, 2010 Barbara E. Towle (Seattle, WA) I highly recommend this DVD. It is a heartwarming story about an orphan boy who follows the music in his soal as he searches for his parents. He doesn't know why they gave him up but the music tells him that they love him and want him. The young actor is perfect for the role. You can't help but fall in love with him.
