Love it! August 24, 2010 Liz I remembered seeing this movie on PBS. But I only saw bits and parts of it. And from what I saw I really liked it. Picked it up from the library to make sure it was the right one and to see if it was the best one. And it was. I really like this movie. I have watched this movie over and over. It is the closest one to the book. Not everything is exact to the book, but pretty close. Very rarely when you watch a movie after reading the book that the movie is exact to the book. I found that this movie did a good job. I liked the actors I think they did a good job with that. I would recommend this movie to anyone who loves Jane Austen or loves romance movies.
Good movie August 19, 2010 A. M. Wilson (Palm Bay, FL) I have not read the book, but the friend with whom I watched the movie, has. She and I were both a little disturbed by the actual reading of some beyond risque excerpts from books in the movie. I would not recommend this for younger teens, though I tend to be more conservative in what I will allow my children to watch.
Overall, I liked the movie, but it is not likely to be on my re-watch once a quarter list like other Austen movies I enjoy.
Good Version August 14, 2010 Tera Hishon (Chino Hills, CA USA) This adaptation was far better than the 2000. It stays true to the novel and really gives the feel of the 19c Gothic Novel. The pump room and assembly rooms are depcited acuarately as well as the circualting library. (libraries where one had to pay a fee to check out a book - Gothic novels were very big sellers then - and not affordable by all). This story is a parody of Ann Radcliffe's Romance of the Forest. If you are tempted to read some of the novels found in those circulating libraries check out [...]
Also, for more information on the circulating libraries and gothic novels, try reading The History of Gothic Publishing, 1800 - 1830 by Franz Potter.
Northanger Abby July 27, 2010 Dee Wish, I hadn't wasted my money on this. The characters were so shallow and at the end I was waiting for the story to have something more. So disappointed. Would not reccommend this version.
