Literary adaptations just don't get any better than director Joe Wright's 2005 version of Jane Austen's Pride & Prejudice. The key word here is adaptation, because Wright and gifted screenwriter Deborah Moggach have taken liberties with Austen's classic novel that purists may find objectionable, but in this exquisite film their artistic decisions are entirely justified and exceptionally well executed. It's a more rural England that we see here, circa 1790 (as opposed to Austen's early 19th century), in which Elizabeth Bennet (Keira Knightley) is one of several sisters primed for marriage, with an anxious mother (Brenda Blethyn) only too desperate to see her daughters paired off with the finest, richest husbands available. Elizabeth is strong-willed and opinionated, but her head (not to mention her pride and prejudice) lead her heart astray when she meets the wealthy Mr. Darcy (Matthew Macfadyen), whose own sense of decency and discretion (not to mention his pride and prejudice) prevent him from expressing his mutual affection. They're clearly meant for each other, and as Knightley's performance lights up the screen (still young enough to be girlishly impertinent, yet wise beyond her 20 years), Austen's timeless romance yields yet another timeless adaptation, easily on par with the beloved BBC miniseries that has been embraced by millions since originally broadcast in 1995. Individual tastes will vary as to which version should be considered "definitive," but with a stellar supporting cast including Judi Dench and Donald Sutherland, this impeccable production achieves its own kind of perfection. --Jeff Shannon

Description
One of the greatest love stories of all time, Pride & Prejudice, comes to the screen in a glorious new adaptation starring Keira Knightley. When Elizabeth Bennett (Knightley) meets the handsome Mr. Darcy (Matthew MacFadyen), she believes he is the last man on earth she could ever marry. But as their lives become intertwined in an unexpected adventure, she finds herself captivated by the very person she swore to loathe for all eternity. Based on the beloved masterpiece by Jane Austen, it is the classic tale of love and misunderstanding that sparkles with romance, wit and emotional force. Critics are calling it "Exhilarating. A joy from start to finish" (Carina Chocano, Los Angeles Times).

5 out of 5 stars Impeccable   August 27, 2010

How can you not love a movie when it starts off with a woman reading a book, completely distracted by her intellectual pursuits. Then imagine this woman walking with vibrant piano playing in the background and her dress flowing in the breeze. Put her in an idyllic country setting and then set up an impossible romance. Then surround her with four lively sisters who love to dance and live for the faintest moment of romance. There are so many scenes in which these women amusingly listen at doors or giggle while discussing men. It is simply made even more intoxicating when these women engage men in witty banter. Truly, Elizabeth is a radiant delight. There is one scene where she expresses her utter disdain for Mr. Darcy and they almost kiss. The tension is unbearable but I completely adored every minute of it. To top it all off, this movie is so superbly filmed it makes other movies pale in comparison. The timing in every scene is impeccable and the precision is an absolute wonder to behold. This is now my all-time favorite movie. It is just indescribably beautiful. This is truly a movie I will enjoy again and again. Thank you to the friend who sent this to me for my birthday! What a lovely surprise. If I could give this movie 100 stars I would!

1 out of 5 stars The Harlequin Romance Version   August 17, 2010

Friends of mine -- all of whom know my great love for the novel -- insisted I see this film, in spite of my firmly stated desire not to do so. I finally caved this weekend. Big mistake. This movie bears only a vague similarity of character names and basic plotline to Austen's novel.

Visually, the film was more than a disappointment, it was a calamity. The characters looked greasy, unkempt, and dirt poor. I thought "Am I watching Cold Comfort Farm? Are there pigs in the drawing room? What IS this? And would someone please, PLEASE comb their hair!" Costumes, sets, everything was far more suitable to a steampunk version of a Bronte mashup than a Regency period piece.

In terms of character, one of the things everyone said to me was "OMG, it captures the passion underlying the novel! You must see it! Flail, flail, flail!" Well, actually, no, it didn't -- if throbbing passion actually underlies Pride and Prejudice (which I've never noticed it to do). I thought Darcy and Elizabeth had little to no chemistry. She seemed peevish the entire film, and he simply looked confused and indecisive. No less baffled was Donald Southerland -- whom I hugely admire and respect -- in his turn as Mr. Bennet: a sad, defeated, broken man...definitely not something I'd ever read in the novel. Georgiana, to my shock, was actually pert. PERT. I was speechless.

Judi Dench, god bless her, was in a completely different film. I really wanted to see that film. Badly. Unfortunately, I wasn't watching it.

I won't comment much on the dialogue, as I know cramming a huge novel into two hours is a fairly impossible task, but to actually have Charlotte Lucas say "Don't judge me, Lizzie, don't you dare judge me!", or Elizabeth blurt, "Mr. Darcy, what are you doing here!" when she sees him at Rosings is so far beyond the pale, that the palings aren't even in sight any longer.

Perhaps I was missing the director's, the actors', the designers', and the writers' point in this film, but all I felt I was missing was "Pride and Prejudice."

In a word: dreadful.

5 out of 5 stars The Real Darcy and Elizabeth   August 17, 2010

I've seen different versions of Pride and Prejudice, including the versions with Laurence Olivier and Colin Firth. None come close to this version. Even though story had to be condensed to fit the runtime of the movie, the integrity of the story remains. Keira Knightly is powerful as Elizabeth and Matthew Macfadyen IS the ultimate Darcy. Donald Sutherland, Judi Dench and Tom Hollander as Mr. Collins are also masterful. The musical score outstanding! This is a must see!
